- Independent thinking and working ability is something a good scientist must possess. - Question: Whom would I pick to be my next postdoctoral fellow? Student A: First author of a Cell paper, but the advisor came up the idea, designed experiments, worked with the student and wrote the paper. Student B: First author of a Development or even a Genetics paper. He came up the idea, designed experiments after discussing with others and PI, did all the work, and wrote the paper (PI helped to modify the paper). This is a no-brainer.
